Frequently Asked Questions

There are many advantages to owning an electric or hybrid vehicle, not least energy efficiency and carbon reduction. The government is focused on promoting the use of EVs with a £400m commitment to encourage potential purchasers. Part of this strategy sets aside funding for the grant-assisted installation of EV charge units at homes throughout the UK. Below we have tried to answer common questions relating to domestic and commercial EV charge point installations.

EV Domestic Installations

  • I thought Grants were available for Free Supply and Installation of Home Chargers? +

    A. Up until August 2014 the UK Governments OLEV Home Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Scheme enabled homeowners a full grant for supply and installation of approved EV chargepoint models. Under new guidelines issued in August 2014 domestic EV charge point grants are now set at a 75% contribution to the cost of one chargepoint and its installation, with a grant cap of £900 per household/eligible vehicle.

  • What are the requirements to be accepted for a Grant? +

The Free Chargepoint scheme ended in August 2014 and new applicants are required to either own or lease an electric vehicle or be the primary user of a company EV. Commercial Vehicle operators can also apply for a home installation if they have been the primary user for six months from July 2014. To qualify you must also be a homeowner, or landlord with off-street parking.

  • What will it Cost? +

25% of the cost of supply and installation cost is now charged to the homeowner, with the maximum grant available set at £900. The average cost of an installation is £1000 depending on the location and installation requirements. For this typical scenario a grant of £750 would be available. For an additional £90, domestic customers can also upgrade to a 7kw unit, which will approximately double the speed of charging.

  • How long does installation take? +

Once your order is placed; a Retroflo engineer will visit your home to undertake a pre-installation survey to check the current electric supply meets regulatory requirements. If all is OK, installation can go ahead. Fitting either the POD Point Solo or Rolec WallPod EV charger generally takes about two hours.

  • Why do I need a dedicated charging unit? +

Safety: domestic wiring is not designed to handle the load that an electric car can draw when it is plugged into a standard 13A socket. Our EV Charge Point units are connected to the electricity supply with safe wiring that can withstand the electrical load.

Speed: electric cars charge more quickly with a dedicated connection. Charging a Nissan Leaf using a 13A socket takes up to 12 hours.

    • A 3.7kW home charging unit will fully charge a Nissan Leaf in around 6-8hours.
    • A 7kW Home unit will fully charge a Nissan Leaf in around 3-4hours.

Convenience: home charging units have advanced management features including remote control that can lock access and determine time of charging, to make the most of off-peak electricity.

  • Why choose Retroflo? +

    • Approved Installer: Retroflo is an NECIEC approved contractor with many years' expertise in electrical installations. Our British Standard working practices and HSE processes ensure the safety and quality of the installation.
    • Low installation and running costs: Our commercial charge points offer the option to charge two vehicles simultaneously, which significantly reduces the effective cost per charging socket. Furthermore, the use of industry standard foundations and electrical connections makes installation and connection a straightforward and cost-effective process.
    • Generate Revenues: The system has flexible billing at its core. You can select to supply electricity for free to your users (and simply collect usage data), or you can implement a tariff based on time or energy used.
    • Web-based management: Commercial EV charge points can be wirelessly connected to the a central communication network. This allows real-time management of your units and users through our administration website.
    • Maximum uptime: Fault reporting is automated through the communication network meaning maintenance can be instigated the moment an error occurs.
  • What are the benefits of installing EV charge points? +

    • Provide safe, low cost charging for employees and visitors.
    • Encourage your staff to adopt sustainable forms of transport by providing charging at work.
    • Display and promote your company's green credentials and provide an additional service to visitors.
    • Advertise the availability of charge points online to encourage customers from surrounding areas to visit.
    • Monitor how the provision of charge points improves visitor stay times.
  • How will I manage usage and costs? +

Our EV charge point solutions help owners reduce energy costs with intelligent charge scheduling to take advantage of lower tariff periods. With complete control and monitoring of their network, charge point owners can either opt for a swipe card system that allows access for authorised users only, or choose to make the unit available for all EV drivers to use.

  • Does the energy used contribute to CRC calculations? +

Yes, and the system will easily generate reports for taxable benefit and CRC calculations. The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme was designed to encourage large public and private sector organisations to reduce their carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions through energy efficiency.

  • Will my charge point be compatible with the Plugged In Places public network? +

Yes, both Rolec and PodPoint units use the industry-standard Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) and can be connected to the UK PiP charging network. The network in the North East is operated by Charge Your Car and promotes approximately 1500 charge points. Visit the website for more information or to enrol.
